South Tahoe advances to state tournament

The South Tahoe 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars won the consolation game of the Nevada small-league tournament with a 12-6, eight-inning win over Lyon County on Sunday to advance to the state tournament.

South Tahoe trounced Fernley 17-1 on Friday to advance to the championship game against powerful Reno West. Sunday’s title game wasn’t pretty for the South Tahoe squad as Reno West bashed its way to an 18-1 win and one of the two berths in the state tournament.

Facing Lyon County, the winner of the losers’ bracket, South Tahoe starter Cameron Hausfeld went four innings and left with a 4-4 tie. Max Simonian came on in relief and held the opponent scoreless for three innings, but the South Tahoe offense went cold and the score remained knotted.

Lyon County got a runner to third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Simonian came through with a strikeout to send the game to extra innings.

Colt Johnston started the eight-run extra frame by reaching base for South Tahoe and Kyle Dupree brought him home with the go-ahead run with a long triple. Jake Leonard provided insurance runs with a two-RBI single later in the inning, enough for Simonian to give up two runs and still pick up the win.

South Tahoe will open the state tournament on Saturday against South Reno in Reno.
