South Tahoe All-Stars rally in last at-bat
Comeback wins don’t get much sweeter than the one the South Tahoe 14-Year-Old Babe Ruth All-Stars pulled off on Monday night in Sparks.
South Tahoe scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past North Valley 4-3 in the state tournament at Don Mello Park. Kevin Yelles’ two-run single capped the final-inning rally.
Garrett Kankel ignited the comeback with a leadoff single in the seventh. Kevin Lucero followed with a single, sending Kankel to second. Mike Olivo’s fourth hit of the game plated Kankel, who slid under the tag.
Lucero and Olivo took advantage of the throw home, moving up to third and second bases, respectively.
Next up came Yelles, who delivered the game-winning hit, emptying the dugout and starting a South Tahoe celebration.
“It was amazing. I told them all game long they were going to beat them,” said South Tahoe manager Dave Olivo.
South Tahoe (2-1) will play Sparks today at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.
South Tahoe’s pitching was nearly unhittable as Ryan Woods and winner Cody Reeder combined on a two-hitter. Sparks took advantage of free passes to first base to build a 3-0 lead, but Woods drove in a run to make the score 3-1.
