South Tahoe boys pull out win over Douglas

The South Tahoe boys tennis team received a scare Monday in its final league match of the season when the Vikings defeated Douglas, 13-9 1/2.

The first-string players only dropped one point in the first round of play, head coach Pat Fagen then subbed in the second string and the match became very close. But the Vikings pulled together in the third round and got the win.

South Tahoe was lead by the strong play of the duo of Chris Stamey and Jason Scott, who won all three of their matches to help the Vikings.

“I feel that Chris and Jason are really coming together, they’re playing very well as a team right now,” Fagen said. “They could be a strong zone contender with the way they’re playing.”

Fagen also got key performances from Brendan McGraw and Brian Stamm. Stamm defeated Douglas’s Mark Sawiki in the third round, 6-0, while McGraw bested Chris Baker, 6-4.

“We needed those two wins to get the win,” Fagen said. “It was also nice to get the subs in before zone.”

The Vikings have one more match before the team zone playoffs start: South Tahoe will host Incline on Wednesday.

“We’re getting ready for team zone now and our first-teamers are playing well,” Fagen said. “We just need to continue to work hard and we should be pretty good for zone.”
