South Tahoe gets unique zone preview

Darin Olde, Tribune staff writer

It wasn’t a league match, but South Tahoe High’s volleyball team got something better: a good look at the first round of the 4A Northern Region Volleyball Championship.

The Vikings defeated Galena 15-13, 15-12, 8-15, 3-15, 15-12 in a varsity only match Tuesday at South Tahoe High School.

When head coach Gary Hankoff arranged the match, he didn’t know the Vikings would play second-seeded Galena in the first round of zone, but that’s how the things worked out.

“It was a nice little preview for us. If nothing else, we should go into zone feeling pretty confident,” he said.

Rachel Hankoff led the team with 16 kills and 20 digs.

Not far behind was Cindy Davis with 12 kills, no errors and 10 digs.

“Cindy Davis on the offensive end was amazing,” coach Hankoff said.

Kristen Burrell also had a strong day with four blocks and eight kills.

Coach Hankoff added that the Vikings had a poor day passing the ball and were fortunate that Galena wasn’t more effective on offensive.

On a positive note, when the Vikings did pass their offense ran smoothly.

Hankoff added that a recent tournament in Sacramento against some strong California teams may have given the Vikings the edge vs. Galena.

The Vikings begin zone on Nov. 8. vs. Galena at 4 p.m. at Douglas High School.
