South Tahoe JV rallies for winning season
Once the weather turned warm, the South Tahoe High junior varsity baseball team heated up as well.
The Vikings rallied for a winning season on Saturday, sweeping Hug 10-0 and 9-5 at Todd Fields to finish with a 12-11 record. South Tahoe won its final eight games, including three-game sweeps of North Valleys and Hug, to creep over the .500 mark.
“Something that we really focused on was having a lot of fun,” said STHS coach Glenn Russell. “They’ve been cheering for each other and really believing in themselves.”
The Vikings breezed to the opening win as Buck Pershing tossed a four-hit shutout and fanned eight. The hitting stars were David Schue with two doubles, Jason Anthenian and Garrett Datrio going 3 for 3 and Chris Diana hitting 2 for 3.
Russell started nine different players in game two with similar results. The decisive blow came in a six-run fourth inning when Michael Orman and Jake Cain legged out back-to-back triples, Blaine Inglis followed with a double and Forrest Jett delivered a triple. Inglis and Max Meeker had two hits for the winners. Starting pitcher Ryan Woods earned the win, while Jake Cain closed out the win by pitching the final three innings.
Russell wishes his club could play some of the teams it lost to earlier.
“As soon as we start playing well, the season is over,” he said. “Another month would be great because we’re ready to go.”
