South Tahoe rolls to state tourney
South Tahoe’s 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth All-Star team had too much hitting and pitching for its opponents at a state-qualifying tournament over the weekend in Fernley.
Averaging 14.5 runs while surrendering just 3.5 per game, South Lake Tahoe advanced to the state tournament that starts Saturday in Fallon.
Jamie Yelles pitched five superlative innings and Rigel Garman went 5 for 5 and knocked in four runs to lead South Tahoe past Lyon County 15-5 on Saturday.
Yelles also was productive at the plate, going 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Collecting two hits were Alex Vogt, Jason Reum and Andrew Contaxis. Vogt had two RBIs and Reum walked twice.
In addition, Jake Braun drove in two runs.
Alex Potnick pitched the final inning in relief of Yelles.
Potnick got the start on Sunday in a 14-2 trouncing of North Valleys. Colton Marchesseault worked the final two innings. Both pitchers gave up a run.
Braun and Vogt were tough outs for North Valleys. Braun was 3 for 4 with a walk and two RBIs, while Vogt went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Joe Bacci Zanetell was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
South Tahoe will play Carson at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fallon.
South Tahoe’s 14-Year-old All-Stars weren’t required to play in a qualifying tournament and will begin state tournament action next weekend in Reno.
