South Tahoe Snowboard Series rides again

The most successful program in the U.S.A. Snowboarding Association starts its season this weekend with a giant slalom and slalom competitions at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

South Tahoe Snowboarding Series, after taking the most medals of any U.S. region at nationals for the fourth year in row, is back this year with sponsors Vans and Ford Ranger helping with the series and supporting the five STSS members on the Junior National Team.

“We’re getting lots of interest from a lot of folks, which is very exciting,” said STSS co-director Donna Vano. Vano and her husband Alan have directed the program since it split from the North Tahoe Snowboard Series four years ago. “Everything is coming together better than ever this year.”

Formerly called the U.S. Amateur Snowboarding Series, USASA has grown over the 15 years and is now one of the most recognized youth snowboarding programs in the nation. It has helped athletes such as Ross Powers, Keir Dillon and Kelly Clark achieve Olympic heights.

STSS has additional help this year with its computer system and also boasts a schedule split between Kirkwood, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Ski Resort.

STSS will host 12 events before the USASA Nationals March 24-30 at Sunday River, Maine.

Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome. For more information, see the USASA Web site at http://www.usasa.org.
