FALLON, Nev. — The South Tahoe volleyball team notched a bounce-back victory on Tuesday — and delivered a hit to Fallon’s playoff hopes in the process. The Vikings swept the Greenwave 25-14, 25-22, 27-25 to move two games up on Fallon in the league standings.

South Tahoe (13-10, 5-3 I-A Northern) survived a big hole in the third set, trailing 10-3 at one point, and clawed its way back to earn the three-set win. Fallon (5-12, 3-5) was plagued by hitting and service errors and crumbled down the stretch instead of forcing a fourth set.

“We have had a really good, positive attitude,” Vikings coach Dan McLaughlin said. “We had some good matchups at the end. Kendhyl (Delacour), our big lefty, had a stronger game. We turned up the intensity on the defense level.”

Fallon raced out to the 10-3 lead on the service of Evan Matheson and on a block by Megan McCormick. Slowly, though, South Tahoe climbed back into the set. Jade Child blasted and ace and a tip by Paige Naccarato cut the lead to 10-7.

Fallon pushed its lead to 19-12 on the serve of Kayla Kincaid and another block by McCormick. Still, South Tahoe didn’t budge.

A pair of service errors by the Greenwave and a block from South Tahoe’s Zoe Mosedale sliced the lead to 21-16. Trailing 23-19, Delacour drove home a kill, Kaitlynn Watson served an ace and another hitting error by Fallon tied the set at 23.

Matheson, though, gave Fallon hope with a kill of her own and a 24-23 lead, but South Tahoe tied the match again on a blast by Delacour. The Vikings’ final two points came on hitting errors from Fallon.

“We started making digs and that keyed the rally,” McLaughlin added. “If you don’t play good defense, Fallon will hit you out of the gym.”

South Tahoe survived the second set with solid net play and a pair of aces by Haley Crowson. Naccarato put home a pair of kills, Crowson delivered her serves and another hitting error gave the set to South Tahoe.

“We are fortunate to win both games the way we did because it could have easily gone the other way,” McLaughlin said. “You look at the scoreboard and think it was a rout, but it wasn’t. It was a hard-fought game the whole way.”

South Tahoe returns to action tonight at Elko for a 6 p.m. match. The Vikings play at Elko Saturday in a match scheduled to start at noon.
