South Tahoe volleyball team earns tournament division win
The South Tahoe volleyball team played its way to a division win in the High Sierra Tournament Friday and Saturday at Wooster High School.
Some other matches of the 52-team tournament were held at Galena and North Valley.
“We struggled the first day. We won some of our matches but we were not very consistent,” said STHS volleyball coach Janae Ballingham. “On the second day we just got better as the day went on.”
The Vikings finished third in their five-team pool, sending them to the Jack Division which they won in three games over Del Norte. The team also went three games in a divisional semifinal match against Golden Valley.
“We had a lot of really good kills by Monica Knight and consistent passing by Elan Whitney,” Ballingham said. “We also had great defense by Brittany Valenzuela.”
The Vikings also played in another warm-up tourney in Winnemucca Aug. 29-30 in which they won the Silver Division by beating some schools from the Boise, Idaho area.
Erika Schimmel received all-team tournament player honors at that tourney.
The team’s first regular-season match is Thursday at home against Reed beginning at 6 p.m.
