Gibb wins middle school state wrestling title

The South Tahoe Middle School wrestling team finished up its season by collecting five medals at the state tournament March 24-25 in Yerington.

The Timberwolf medal haul showed an improvement of one medal from the year before.

“We’ve been adding a medal every year,” STMS coach Dennis Romero said. “Last year, we took eight kids and brought home four medals; this year, we took nine and brought home five.”

Included in those five medals was champion Garrett Gibb, who won the seventh grade 80-pound division.

Gibb wrestled the same competitor he had faced in the previous tournament to win the title.

“Nobody scored a point against him throughout the whole tournament,” Romero said.

Another seventh-grader, Todd Fountain, finished fourth in the 110-pound division.

Eighth-grader Ryan Duin also took fourth in the 95-pound division, Evan Maclean finished in fourth in the 110-pound division and Matt Bobman was fourth in the 130-pound division.

“(Assistant coach) Tom Barnes and I came up with sets of routines to give the boys balance and mat sense and that seemed to pay off with all the medals we brought home this year,” Romero said.

Little League sign-ups and tryouts

The last day to sign up for South Tahoe Little League is Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the South Tahoe High School gym.

Tryouts for majors and minor leagues will held during that time as well. The fee for signing up is $70.
