Sports Roundup: Lake Tahoe CC soccer teams hit the road, Whittell volleyball suffers first league loss

LAKE TAHOE CC WOMEN’S SOCCER BEATS SEQUOIAS 4-0, ENDS THREE-GAME SLIDE
VISALIA, Calif. — The Lake Tahoe Community College women’s soccer team delivered a much-needed win on the road Saturday, Sept. 17. The Coyotes beat College of the Sequoias 4-0 in a non-conference match, ending a three-game losing streak in decisive fashion.
Lake Tahoe (2-3-2) scored three goals in the first 30 minutes en route to victory Saturday. Sophomore Shawa Guerrero-Escobedo found the back of the net twice off assists from freshman Kenya Maltase, and freshman Victoria Sanchez added a third with an assist from freshman Yareli Trujillo.
Maltase added a goal of her own 10 minutes into the second half to put the game out of reach. Sequoias (0-4-1) remained winless on the season with the four-goal defeat.
The Coyotes return to action Friday, Sept. 23, when they conclude non-conference play with a home match against West Valley College (Saratoga, Calif.). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
COYOTES MEN’S SOCCER COMES UP SHORT AT DE ANZA
CUPERTINO, Calif. — The Lake Tahoe Community College men’s soccer team concluded non-conference play with a road defeat Friday, Sept. 16. The Coyotes lost 3-1 at De Anza College to cap a stretch of 10 matches in 21 days.
Lake Tahoe (3-4-3) trailed by two goals at halftime, and fell behind 3-0 two minutes into the second half. The Coyotes avoided the shutout against De Anza (4-1-1) in the 86th minute, when freshman Lewis Gillings scored off an assist from sophomore Stephen Flora.
Lake Tahoe is in the midst of an 11-day break before opening Golden Valley Conference play at Butte College (Oroville, Calif.) on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
WHITTELL VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY COLEVILLE, SUFFERS FIRST LEAGUE LOSS
ZEPHYR COVE — The Whittell volleyball team fell for the first time in league play Friday, Sept. 16. The Warriors were swept by visiting Coleville 15-25, 19-25, 21-25, a loss that snapped a two-game winning streak.
Whittell (2-8, 1-1 1A West) returned to action at home Tuesday, Sept. 20, against Mineral County. The Warriors host Virginia City on Friday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. and take on Sage Ridge the following morning at 10 a.m.
