SOUTH TAHOE VOLLEYBALL WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT, HANDS DAYTON FIRST LEAGUE LOSS
DAYTON, Nev. — The South Tahoe volleyball team produced a fifth straight road victory Wednesday, Sept. 21. The Vikings beat Dayton in four sets 25-17, 25-21, 15-25, 25-18, handing the Dust Devils their first loss in 3A Northern League play.
South Tahoe (11-3, 4-1 3A Northern) extended its current winning streak to five matches, remaining undefeated on a road trip that concludes Friday, Sept. 23, at Sparks. Against Dayton (10-6, 4-1), senior Zoe Mosedale ran the Vikings offense with 36 assists, four kills and 11 aces.
Junior Novel Moses tallied 11 kills, 19 digs and two aces Wednesday, and her serving kept the Dust Devils out of system throughout the match. Junior McKenna Brewer finished with 12 kills, six digs and four solo blocks, and senior Ashley Bricker added 23 digs and two aces.
After ending their six-match road trip at Sparks on Friday, the Vikings return home for four straight contests. South Tahoe opens that stretch at the Blue Gym against league-leading Truckee on Wednesday, Sept. 28 — first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
WHITTELL GIRLS SOCCER BEATS YERINGTON 6-0, REMAINS UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE
ZEPHYR COVE — The Whittell girls soccer team maintained its perfect record in 2A Northern League action in decisive fashion Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Warriors downed Yerington 6-0 at home for a fifth straight league victory.
Whittell (5-1, 5-0 2A Northern) scored three goals before and after halftime Tuesday en route to the six-goal win. Sophomore Madison Burch and senior Ali Copsy each found the back of the net in the first four minutes, and the Warriors controlled play the rest of the way against Yerington (0-4, 0-3).
Copsy finished with two goals and an assist against the Lions, while senior Gigi Stetler added a goal and two assists. Sophomore Alize Hernandez and senior Samantha Forvilly also scored for Warriors in the shutout win.
The Warriors return to action at home Monday, Sept. 26, in a nonleague match against North Tahoe. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. as Whittell concludes a stretch of six straight home matches.
SOUTH TAHOE BOYS TENNIS EXTENDS UNBEATEN STREAK TO SEVEN MATCHES
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The South Tahoe boys tennis team delivered a lopsided road victory Tuesday, Sept. 20, to remain unbeaten on the season. The Vikings beat Incline 17-1 to extend their streak to seven matches.
South Tahoe (7-0 3A Northern) had a 5-1 lead after the first round, and didn’t drop a set the rest of the way against the Highlanders. The Vikings took all nine singles sets Tuesday, including two from No. 1 singles Louis Marin and three apiece from No. 2 Hawley Jarrett and No. 3 Matthew Barnett.
On the doubles side, the Vikings’ No. 2 team of Quinn Proctor and Peter Sullivan won two of its three sets with scores of 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) and 7-5. Both the No. 1 team of Jonathan LaRue and Kailer Womack and the No. 2 pairing of Jackson Kuzmik and Juan Vazquez won two sets before being subbed out for the final round.
The Vikings returned to action Thursday, Sept. 22, with a home match against North Tahoe at STHS Tennis Complex. South Tahoe plays the first of its two matches next week on the road Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Sparks.
