Sports Roundup: Whittell girls soccer locks up top seed for Div. III state tournament
WHITTELL GIRLS SOCCER LOCKS UP TOP SEED FOR STATE TOURNAMENT
YERINGTON, Nev. — The Whittell girls soccer rolled to a victory in its season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 27, a win that helped it earn the top seed in the Div. III state tournament. The Warriors beat Yerington 10-0 on the road, and that result coupled with a tie between North Tahoe and Incline led to them finishing atop the league standings.
Whittell (13-2-2, 11-1-2 III North) finished with the same record in league play as North Tahoe, and won the tiebreaker based on a win in the teams’ second meeting. Incline finished two points back in third place — the Lakers and Highlanders tied 1-1 in Incline Village, Nev. on Tuesday.
The defending state champion Warriors enter the Div. III state tournament as the No. 1 seed, and will open against fourth-seeded White Pine on Friday, Nov. 6. The Div. III state championship will be played Saturday, Nov. 7. Incline is the host of the two-day tournament.
SOUTH TAHOE BOYS SOCCER TIES TRUCKEE 3-3
TRUCKEE, Calif. — The South Tahoe boys soccer team rallied to tie rival Truckee on the road Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Vikings and Wolverines played to a 3-3 draw, with South Tahoe pulling even on a corner kick with 10 minutes left.
South Tahoe (7-1-7 I-A Northern) struck first in Tuesday’s match and had a 1-0 lead at halftime. After a five-goal second half, the Vikings and Truckee finished level on the scoreboard. STHS twice erased one-goal deficits to earn the tie.
Martin Jimenez scored twice for South Tahoe against the Wolverines and Brandon Estrada added a goal. Cesar Ruiz finished with a pair of assists.
The Vikings are currently in fourth place in the league standings, one point behind Truckee. South Tahoe concluded league play at Fernley on Thursday, Oct. 29, and wraps up the regular season at home against Incline on Monday, Nov. 2 — kickoff at Viking Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
WARRIORS BOYS SOCCER WRAPS UP SEASON
YERINGTON, Nev. — The Whittell boys soccer team ended its 2015 campaign with a road defeat on Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Warriors lost at Yerington 12-2 in their last match of the season.
Whittell (2-14-1, 1-10-1 III North) finished seventh in the league standings in its return to the pitch following a one-year hiatus. The Warriors beat White Pine and tied Battle Mountain in league play to go along with a non-league win over Quincy (Calif.).
