Sports Roundup: Whittell girls soccer pitches pair of road shutouts, extends winning streak to eight matches
WHITTELL GIRLS SOCCER BLANKS BATTLE MOUNTAIN, PERSHING COUNTY
The Whittell girls soccer team hit the road last weekend, Oct. 16-17, and returned home with a pair of shutout victories. The Warriors beat Battle Mountain 8-0 on Friday before downing Pershing County 5-0 on Saturday afternoon — the victories extended their winning streak to eight matches.
Whittell (12-1-1, 10-1-1 III Northern) is on an 11-match unbeaten streak dating back to mid-September. The Warriors are currently tied with North Tahoe atop the Div. III Northern League standings.
WARRIORS VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS PYRAMID LAKE, STARTS STREAK
NIXON, Nev. — The Whittell volleyball team delivered a sweep on the road Tuesday, Oct. 20, to keep the postseason within reach. The Warriors swept Pyramid Lake 25-16, 25-20, 25-9, notching a second straight win.
Four days earlier, Whittell (9-11, 7-5 IV West) produced its first five-set win of the season by closing out Virginia City. The Warriors beat the Muckers 25-21, 13-25, 25-21, 24-26, 16-14 to win their first five-setter in five tries this year.
With four games to play, Whittell is within a half-game of fourth-place Coleville (9-12, 8-5) for the last playoff spot in Div. IV West League. Just ahead of those teams in third place is Sage Ridge (9-4).
SOUTH TAHOE VOLLEYBALL FALLS AT DAYTON, DROPS THIRD STRAIGHT
DAYTON, Nev. — The South Tahoe volleyball team lost in four sets at Dayton on Wednesday, Oct. 21. After taking the first set, the Vikings lost the last three en route to a 25-11, 23-25, 22-25, 21-25 defeat at the hands of the Dust Devils.
For South Tahoe (8-7, 7-6 I-A Northern), Wednesday’s loss followed a pair of close defeats in consecutive days. The Vikings lost in five sets to Fallon at the Blue Gym on Friday, Oct. 16, a day after falling in four sets at Lowry.
With five matches left in league play, South Tahoe currently sits in fifth place. The Vikings need only one more win to lock up a top-six spot and a playoff berth.
VIKINGS GIRLS GOLF WRAPS UP SEASON
The South Tahoe girls golf team wrapped up its 2015 season on Thursday, Oct. 15 at Fernley Golf Course — none of the Vikings’ four players qualified for the Div. I-A state tournament. A week earlier at Winnemucca Golf Course on Oct. 8, Courtney Cromwell led South Tahoe with a 108, Kylee Lyons shot a personal-best 121 and Meg Carlson carded a 150.
WHITTELL BOYS SOCCER FALLS AT BATTLE MOUNTAIN 3-1
BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. — The Whittell boys soccer team couldn’t break through on the road in a close defeat on Friday, Oct. 16. The Warriors lost 3-1 at Battle Mountain, a result that dropped them to 2-11-1 overall and 1-8-1 in Div. IV West League play.
