STAT golf tournament is full

The second annual Support South Tahoe Athletic Teams (STAT) fund-raiser golf tournament sold out quicker than last year’s inaugural tournament.

STAT, which is hoping to raise money for athletic scholarships and improvements of athletic facilities on the South Shore, is hosting the tournament on Sunday at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course in Meyers.

Tournament director Vikki Grant said the final spots were reserved more than a week ago. There will be 32 teams at this year’s tournament, two more than originally planned.

“We could probably add a few more teams, but we don’t want people to complain that the play was too slow and then not come back next year,” Grant said. “I’ve had to turn a lot of people away this week. My advice for next year is to sign up early.”

The four-player, best ball scramble has a shotgun start scheduled for 9 a.m. All proceeds from the event go toward STAT, which raised $200,000 last year in an effort to keep high school and middle school athletics going during the 2004-05 school year.

Montana celebrity golf tourney at Edgewood

The Legends Golf Tournament, hosted by Harrah’s and Harveys, and featuring former San Francisco 49er quarterback Joe Montana is scheduled for Monday at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline.

In addition to Montana, the event will feature Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg, former NFL stars Barry Sanders and Jim McMahon and former major league pitcher Rollie Fingers. Surfer Jeff Clark, who founded the world-famous surf spot “Mavericks” near Half Moon Bay, will also participate.

The event is closed to the public.

Homecoming run to raise money for STMS track

For years, parents have been racing back and forth between the middle school and high school, shuttling their kids.

Well, on Saturday the race is for real as the first STHS Vikings All-Comers Homecoming Run is scheduled at 8:45 a.m. Following registration at 8 a.m., runners (no walkers) will embark from the bus garage next to South Tahoe Middle School and race along a closed lane of Lake Tahoe Boulevard to the finish line at South Tahoe High’s gold gym.

“It’s very hang loose,” said Karin Holmes. “It will be something different and all of the money goes to the track.”

Holmes has been spearheading a fund-raising drive to refurbish the track facility at South Tahoe Middle School.

The cost is $20 and includes a long-sleeve shirt and a meal ticket for breakfast at STHS.
