STHS begins search for new football coach

South Tahoe High School has begun the process of hiring its fourth varsity head football coach in the past three years.

The school has opened the position to personnel on campus first. Depending on the number and quality of applicants on campus, the school will then decide whether to include off-campus candidates.

Defensive coordinator Chris Morgan and strength and conditioning coach Rod Robison served as interim co-head coaches last season after former University of Nevada quarterback Eric Beavers resigned under protest.

“They’ll both be in the mix. I’m sure they’ll put in their applications,” said STHS Athletic Director Don Borges.

Although the Vikings suffered through their second straight winless season, Borges was pleased with the progress the varsity team made during the 2002 season.

“Nobody quit on the team and we played football,” Borges said. “We had some progress and that’s what we needed.”

Borges speculates the position will be filled sometime next month so the “new” coach can have adequate time to prepare for spring ball and the 2003 season.

Morgan, an alum and a nine-year assistant for the team before becoming co-head coach last year, applied for the position when Tim Jaureguito resigned after the 2000 season. JV coaches Todd McIntyre, the school’s longtime varsity offensive coordinator; Beavers and Robison are other possible candidates.
