South Tahoe High freshman Kenny Craig saved his best round for last.

Craig fired a season-best 7-over-par 79 in the closing round of the Nevada 4A state golf tournament Thursday in Dayton.

“He’s really been coming on for us,” STHS coach Mike Patterson said. “His second-best round was the 80 he shot at zone to get him to state.

“We’re expecting big things out of him next year.”

Craig played near-perfect golf on the front nine, birdieing the par-5 eighth hole en route to a 38. He also birdied the par-5 11th, but had a sluggish finish, bogeying 16 through 18.

Craig’s 36-hole total put him in 33rd place.

Tahoe Verde won the team title, and there was a thrilling finish for individual honors. Galena’s Bryson Young closed with a 5-under-par 67, including an eagle at No. 17 and a birdie on No. 18, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Reed’s Dustin Hall. Hall parred the final holes to take the title by one stroke.
