STHS golfers finish 13th in Carson Invitational

High winds and the narrow fairways of Eagle Valley’s West Course didn’t pull apart the golf games of South Tahoe High’s younger players at the Carson Invitational on Thursday in Carson City.

Three Vikings broke 90 – Hunter Harris with 85 and Mike Scheller and Sean Fannan with 86s – as South Tahoe finished 13th out of 17 teams in the 36-hole spring break event.

“Ending up 13th wasn’t unexpected since we didn’t have our top six players this week,” said Vikings coach Mike Patterson.

Also contributing to the Vikings’ 13th place standing were Jon Wallace with 93 and Andrew Wysong with 96. STHS’s scorecard didn’t reflect Jon Strohm’s 105.

Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, Calif., won the tournament with 760 strokes. McQueen was second. STHS took 883 cuts.

Scott Cotter of McQueen carded the lowest individual score with a 1-under-par 143. Galena’s Bryson Young was a shot back at 144.

South Tahoe should be at full strength when it plays the Northern Nevada League regular-season-concluding tournament Tuesday in Reno.

“We’re playing four our lives as a team,” said Patterson, whose ninth-place Vikings need to overtake eighth-place Douglas at Rosewood Lakes.
