STHS to host High Sierra Classic

Matt O'Neill

Some of the premier high school girls basketball teams will be flocking to the South Shore this weekend and they won’t be here to enjoy the beaches and the sunshine.

Instead they will be sweating it out on the floors of the Blue and Gold gyms at South Tahoe High School in hopes of becoming the champion of the fifth annual Soroptimist High Sierra Challenge.

Seven teams will invade the host South Tahoe Vikings for a three-day round- robin tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Mount Whitney High school from Sacramento, Ripon High, Kelseyville of Clear Lake, Bear River out of Grass Valley, St. Helena, Sonora and Douglas will each play seven games.

Many of the teams have already faced each other during the summer tournament schedule. Ripon was knocked out of a tournament two weeks ago by the Vikings and almost all the squads were in the Cal Fest tournament in the Bay Area.

“Most of the elite teams that were down there will be up here this weekend,” tournament director Jerry Carter said.

In addition to the round robin play, each team will have the opportunity to field at least one three-person team for a three-point shootout.

Last year, South Tahoe finished third in the contest.

There will also be a free barbecue for all athletes in the tournament on Saturday.

Games will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and will go on all day on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
