Two weeks ago, Whittell High was the surprise of the Northern Nevada 2A boys’ basketball division.

Four straight division defeats later, the Warriors are in jeopardy of being the last seed in the upcoming regional tournament in Winnemucca.

After an 80-66 defeat at sixth-place Silver Stage (4-7) on Tuesday night, the Warriors (4-6) slipped to fifth place. Both teams are already guaranteed spots in the postseason since seventh-place Battle Mountain (2-9) has only one game remaining.

Whittell will conclude the regular season with a visit to Rite of Passage (8-2) on Friday and a home finale with surging Independence (6-4) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Against the Nighthawks, Brian Hanshew found the range from the three-point arc, sinking six long-range bombs. Hanshew finished with 23 points. Tommy Esquivel contributed 11 points and Brian Vogt 10 for the Warriors.

Whittell couldn’t stop the one-two punch of Anthony Jefferies and Wyly Sandidge on Tuesday. They combined for 41 points.

The Warriors could finish anywhere from third to sixth place. In any case, Whittell will be playing a first-round game at the regional tournament next Thursday.
