Suglian stands on two podiums

More than 200 athletes from California and Nevada met at Mammoth Mountain last weekend to compete in two United States Ski and Snowboard Association/Far West giant slalom races for J4 and J5 skiers.

The conditions were tough, with blowing snow and a temperature at the start of the course hovering at 10 degrees. But Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation member Mikey Suglian battled through the conditions to post a first-place finish on Saturday and a third-place finish on Sunday.

Heavenly’s Justin Smaine finished eighth and seventh, respectively, in the two races, while Grant Denny came in 11th and fifth and Charlie Manoukian 14th in both races.

Heavenly’s J5 (10 and under) boys held their own as well, with Hughston Norton grabbing two podiums with his third-place finish on Saturday and his second-place finish on Sunday.

Jason Elder also stood on the podium on Sunday after finishing third. He finished seventh on Saturday. Jordan Fuller finished eighth and sixth, respectively, while Wyatt Denny added two top-16 finishes.

Heavenly’s J4 girls were led on Saturday by Courtney Norton (10th) and on Sunday by Whitney (9th).

Later this month in Oregon, Suglian will be competing for one of two spots to represent Team USA at the Junior World Championships in Whistler, British Columbia. The Heavenly J4/5 squad will return to Mammoth on March 30 through April 2 for the Far West Championships.
