❭❭❭ SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Stand-up paddle season on the South Shore officially kicked off last Saturday, June 25. Sixty participants made a splash off El Dorado Beach for Gathering of the Tribes, the first race of South Tahoe Standup Paddle’s summer series.

In the three-lap race that zig-zagged through the water out from Lakeview Commons, South Lake Tahoe’s Luca Genasci finished first with a time of 50:13. Kristin Thomas of Dana Point, California, was the top female in a field that featured a variety of skill levels and boards.

The race included Jonas Letieri, a below-the-elbow double amputee from Brazil. It also featured a six-person craft led by Bob and Kelly Long of West Coast Paddle Sports in San Diego.

Saturday’s event was held in place of South Tahoe SUP’s Race the Lake of the Sky, which will return for a fifth edition in 2017. It also kicked off the local shop’s summer SUP Series for 2016, with additional races scheduled for July 30 and Aug. 27.
