Watch out drivers — bicyclists are taking over the roads. The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition launches its Tahoe Bicycle Challenge this Saturday.
“I am totally stoked about it,” said Ty Polastri, executive director of the coalition. “The reason I’m so excited about it is we’ve totally transformed it this year.”
Whether it’s to work or to play or just to ride, the challenge is meant to get people out on their bikes. Through the challenge’s new website, tahoebikechallenge.org, participants will be able to track their miles, the amount of carbon dioxide they’ve saved from the atmosphere and the amount of money they’ve saved on gas.
Also on the website, participants receive digital pins for different milestones — similar to Vail’s EpicMix.
“This is a way to make it fun. It acknowledges your achievements. And it becomes a conversation piece,” Polastri said.
In addition to the web component, there’s a bike-related photo challenge through the “Tahoe Bike Challenge” Facebook page. On select dates, cyclists are invited to eat at “cycle cafes” or designated eateries that have supported the bicycle community. And there will be a bike path cleanup day on both the North and South shores.
The Challenge will last for 14 days. Cyclists can register for free at tahoebikechallenge.org. The event will wrap up with a party on June 14 at the Moose Lodge in South Lake Tahoe.
