MESA, Ariz. — Staff and physicians from the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics showed off their medical skills and physical talent earlier this month — and left the competition on top. A team of three from the center won first place at the MedWAR Challenge on Jan. 16.

The team of Dr. Lauren Hansen, Christine Kozlowski, PT, and Alby Dean, ATC, took first place against groups from across the nation. The local trio of Dr. Terry Orr, Khristy Gavigan, RN, Caitlin Robinson, RN, placed fourth.

MedWAR stands for Medical Wilderness Adventure Race, and is a race that combines physical challenges and wilderness medicine. On the adventure course, teams competed in multiple sports, including canoeing, mountain biking, trekking and orienteering.

Along the course, the racers were also expected to address and treat patients in mock wilderness medicine scenarios. Some of the “incidents” they encountered this year were a bear bite and a potential spine injury.

MedWar is tentatively scheduled to take place in the Lake Tahoe area this September; for more information visit http://www.medwar.org. Tahoe Center for Orthopedics is online at http://www.tahoeorthopedics.com.
