Tahoe fighter to appear on undercard of Regan title kickboxing bout Friday

South Lake Tahoe fighter Hector Torres doesn’t have any idle time on his hands. The 30-year-old Torres is staying busier than a Disneyland parking lot tram driver as he augments his boxing career with a kickboxing match Friday in Sacramento.

Torres, who has only two kickboxing matches under his belt in the past two years, will take on former world and U.S. amateur champion Travis Johnson in a four-round bout in Ultimate Kickboxing Mania at the Raddison Hotel. The following Friday, Torres will return to the boxing ring for his first eight-rounder at the Hilton in Reno.

“I love kickboxing more. It’s more natural and more of a challenge,” said Torres, who brings a 25-5 pro kickboxing record into the light heavyweight matchup.

Johnson has won his only pro bout but, and undoubtedly, will be tested against someone with Torres’ experience.

“I expect it to be a pretty tough battle, so I’m not taking anything for granted,” Torres said. “It’s really unorthodox when you fight somebody with little experience. They can make you look really bad. The more experience they have, the better chance you have to fight a clean fight.”

Juan Torres, Hector’s trainer and cornerman, believes his brother has another decisive edge working for him.

“He needs to go in there and use his boxing skills to his advantage … be real aggressive but be smart about it,” Juan Torres said.

The Harvey’s Resort & Hotel Casino warehouse driver’s bout is on the undercard of the the Eric Regan-Tom Bottone International Federation Kickboxing Association super middleweight title fight. Torres lost to champion Regan two years ago but nearly upset the Roseville, Calif., fighter in a boxing match last spring.

The card also includes other kickboxers from the region, including a women’s bout between North American champion Jessica Ellis (7-0) of Sacramento and Valana McGee (5-0) of Redding, Calif. Darren Freeman (10-2) of Susanville, Calif., is scheduled to fight Ronnie Wells (11-3) of Santa Jose.

Tickets are $22, $42 and $64 at the door. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
