SAN JOSE, Calif. — For the Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee A hockey team, mottos such as “Grind, Grit, Glory” and “No Mercy” adorned locker room whiteboards before each game at the 2016 Silver Stick Regional Tournament. These messages provided the backdrop and motivation for the team to win the tournament hosted over Thanksgiving weekend at Solar4America Ice at San Jose.

Tahoe finished undefeated in five games at the tournament played Nov. 24-27, which for many of the team members resulted in a second straight championship. The Grizzlies beat the San Francisco Sabercats 3-2 in the title game, scoring the game-winning goal with 12.7 seconds left in regulation.

“I’m extremely proud of this team,” Grizzlies coach Mike Gunderson said. “They’ve worked hard to get to this point and have really come together as a team — many have been teammates going on two years or more now. Everyone on the team contributed during the tournament — all were represented on the score sheet.”

Tahoe advances to the 55th annual Silver Stick Finals held Jan. 19-22 in Port Huron, Michigan, near the Canadian border. Other Grizzlies teams played at the regional tournament, but did not advance in their respective divisions.

The Grizzlies Pee Wee A team is also currently in first place in their regular season standings with a 4-0-1 record. For more information on the South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association, visit http://www.tahoegrizzlies.com.
