Tahoe Gymnastics competitor wins regional title
Tribune staff report
Casey Tara nearly was perfect in the regional gymnastics championships earlier this month in Phoenix.
The Tahoe Gymnastics pupil’s score of 9.825 on pommel horse gave him the class 5 regional title. Tara also scored 8.75 on vault.
Class 5 teammate Kevin Griest, who won a class six regional title a year ago in Las Vegas, was pretty consistent in all of his events, scoring 9.175 on pommel horse, 9.1 on vault and 9.025 on high bar. Griest also scored 8.050 on floor exercise, 8.775 on rings and 8.35 on parallel bars. He finished 17th out of 27 all-around competitors in his age group.
Ricky Braun, a class four competitor, scored 8.2 on floor exercise. Braun was the Nevada state champion in this event.
Mitchell Lincoln also qualified to compete at regionals but was unable to attend due to a conflicting schedule.
The regional meet concluded George Hery Jr.’s coaching career at Tahoe Gymnastics. Hery has accepted a similar position in Reno.
“The main thing is I gave all I could to those boys and they gave me a lot,” Hery Jr. said. “I learned as much as they learned and hopefully they’ll take with them all of the stuff I tried to pass on.
“I’ll always take a piece of them with me because it was a really great experience to work with them. I’ll keep that with me forever.”
Raion Sabo, a former Tahoe Gymnastics member, will compete for High Sierra at nationals May 5-10. Sabo is a class two competitor.
