The Meadows the Warriors biggest competition

Darin Olde, Tahoe Daily Tribune

The Whittell High softball team will play for the first time in the Nevada 2A championships today in Mesquite, Nev., outside of Las Vegas.

“Our goal was to have a bookend season, and we started the season in Mesquite and we’re ending the season at Mesquite and that’s what we wanted,” said Whittell manager Lindsay Wines after winning the zone title game against Hawthorne last weekend.

The Warriors have only seen teams from the other two leagues one other time, in a preseason tournament March 2-3 in Mesquite.

The Warriors won five of six games at that tournament.

The only team to beat the Warriors was The Meadows, a private school.

And that’s exactly the team the Warriors feel will be their biggest competition at state.

The Warriors will play White Pine, its first opponent, at 1:30 p.m. at Virgin Valley High School. The Meadows faces Battle Mountain at 11 a.m. today in game one.
