Tigers maul Vikings
With only four healthy varsity wrestlers, the South Tahoe wrestling team didn’t stand a chance against perennial powerhouse Douglas, which is ranked second in the most recent Sierra Nevada Sports Media poll.
But even though they rolled to a 69-6 Sierra League dual victory on Wednesday at STHS – the Tigers got to see what could be the Northern 4A regional tournament favorite in the heavyweight division.
The Vikings’ Jon Fago’t pinned his opponent in the first period to post South Tahoe’s only win of the night, while Tyler Slater and Cameron Cason both lost by decision in tight matches.
“Obviously dual meets aren’t our forte this year,” said STHS coach Ken Robbins. “The guys that we do put out there are incredible wrestlers. But, as a team, we’re not going to win many duals when there is 14 weight classes.”
The Vikings are off until Jan. 9 when they travel to Carson City to face Carson in another Sierra League dual. Robbins hopes the next few weeks of practice results in rapid improvement.
“We have to keep on remembering that ultimately in the sport of wrestling, while there are team champions, there are 14 individual champions as well,” Robbins said. “I’m fortunate in that respect because that’s not the case with a football or baseball coach. In the past we’ve used this break after Christmas to really prepare ourselves for the rest of the season.”
