Tigers oust ’07 champs

SPARKS – It’s been 16 years, but the Douglas High boys’ basketball team will be packing its bags for the state tournament next week.

The Tigers survived an offensive drought through the final six minutes of the game and held on for a 47-43 win over Galena – avenging the team’s defeat in the Northern 4A Regional championship game last year and clinching their first state berth since 1992.

“It’s a great feeling,” Douglas senior forward David Laird said. “Just being able to do it all together, that was the great part about it.”

The win put Douglas through to the regional championship game Saturday night, when the Tigers will face Reno at 6 p.m. at Spanish Springs High School. The Huskies beast Bishop Manogue 57-45 Thursday.

After James McLaughlin made a layup to give Douglas a 44-32 lead with 6:32 left, the Tigers went cold. The Tigers didn’t hit another field goal as the Grizzlies went on an 11-2 run to close within 46-43 with 10.6 seconds left. Douglas’ Jeff Nady, however, hit the front end of a pair of free throws to clinch the win.

Luke Babbitt of Galena scored 25 points.
