Timberwolves battle blizzard at championship race

They didn’t have to find the snow, it found them.

In a season of snow shortfall, the South Tahoe Middle School Timberwolves concluded their season by competing in a blizzard at the Middle School Cross Country Skiing Championships last weekend at Boreal Ridge near the Auburn Ski Club.

Greg Koeck led the Timberwolves with an eighth-place finish. He completed the 3.5-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 2.1 seconds. The winning time was 20:00.4.

Steven Grant was the only other STMS Nordic skier in the top 20 as he came in 20th at 26.41.6.

Also making it through the blizzard to the finish line were: Evan Sarosik, 29th, 28:20.0; Alex Sharp, 30th, 28:33.4; Ty Dayberry, 33rd, 28:53.9; Nick Stewart, 39th, 30:25.1; Alex Matzinger, 46th, 32:31.8; and Jeff Meager, 52nd, 34:21.3.

Ellen Gallanty and Alicia Hudson led the STMS girls, finishing 20th and 24th, respectively. Gallanty’s time was 35:41.1 and Hudson’s was 37:19.5.

“By the time our two girls raced, it was a full-on blizzard,” said STMS first-year coach Cindy Prestwood. “They did really well and I’m proud of them.”
