Truswell’s sizzing 76 leads WHS at Bishop

Keith Truswell fired the low round – a season-best 76 – but his Whittell High golf team lost to host Bishop, Calif., by one stroke in a two-team dual Monday.

“With one stroke, it could have come from anyone,” said Whittell coach Frank Bruno, whose Warriors have finished out of first place by a combined eight strokes in their past three matches. “That was pretty good because it was Bishop’s home course, and we weren’t familiar with it.”

Bishop collectively shot 429 for the 18-hole match, while Whittell took 430 cuts.

Coming in behind Truswell’s hot score were Whittell’s Ryan Salomon, 82; Dustin Fox, 86; Jade Haynes, 89; Lars Hansen, 97; and Parker Fox, 97.

The Warriors used the road match to tune up for another shot at Nevada 3A Division II leader Manogue. Whittell travels to the Miners’ home course – Rosewood Lakes – on Friday at 11 a.m.

“It will be tough to beat them on their home course because that’s a course where local knowledge gives you a big edge,” Bruno said. “It’s a real target-type course with a lot of narrow fairways and a setup where you play irons off a lot of tees.”

Bruno is also worried about holding down the division’s second spot.

“Hopefully we’ll win one of these events, but I’m more concerned right now with making state because only two teams from our division go. We can’t miss a step.”
