Two STMS wrestlers place first at Fernley

Staff report

Quality over quantity served the South Tahoe Middle School wrestling team well in its first tournament Saturday.

STMS wrestlers earned two first-place medals in a Tah-Neva meet in Fernley.

Eighth-grader Chris Ewing and seventh-grader Tyler Slater won first place in their respective divisions.

The Timberwolves had three additional wrestlers compete and all three won medals. Myles Lopez, an eighth-grader, finished third, while seventh-graders Andrew Chavez and Gavin Garcia came in fourth.

“It’s been difficult to get a team out there and we’re trying to compete with teams who have 40 or 50 kids,” said STMS second-year coach Nick Alexander. “They are learning a lot and getting a lot more individual (instruction) with me.”

STMS competes in a zone-qualifying meet Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in Carson City.
