Two Vikings qualify for state wrestling meet

South Tahoe High is sending two resprensentatives to this week’s state wrestling tournament in Las Vegas — and a pair that were longshots to continue their seasons.

Nick Alexander, a 189-pounder, and 171-pounder Ryan Davis advanced to state by finishing fifth in their weight classes at the Nevada 4A regional tournament Saturday at Galena High in Reno.

Through a series of byes and a key default, Davis secured his trip to Las Vegas with only one victory — an 8-5 decision over an Elko wrestler to open the tournament. Davis then lost a pair of matches by technical fall to set up a match for fifth and sixth places.

However, Davis never had to take the mat, as the McQueen grapper he was scheduled to meet was unable to wrestler because of injured ribs. The default gave Davis fifth place and extended his season an extra week.

Meanwhile, Alexander pinned a McQueen grappler or fifth place to secure his state invitation. Alexander won two other matches to move into position for state consideration.

STHS heavyweight David Vasquez, who entered regionals with a 30-10 record, struggled in his brief tournament appearance. Vasquez lost to McQueen’s Travis Walker 9-3 in the second round and then was eliminated by a North Valleys foe he had pinned earlier in the season.
