uSouth Tahoe 13s eliminated from state

Notanee Vasquez hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh but South Tahoe couldn’t muster any other late-inning magic in a 7-6 loss to Fallon on Sunday at the Nevada State Babe Ruth 13-year-old tournament.

Unlike Saturday’s 9-6 loss to tournament favorite South Reno, South Tahoe never led against Fallon and was knocked out of the double-elimination tournament at Reno’s Jack Tighe Park.

“We came out a little flat today,” said manager Richard Dreager. “The kids played well but we made too many mental errors for a state championship. Tahoe’s not there yet. We’re close but we have a little bit more to go.”

In Saturday’s game, South Tahoe held several multi-run leads before watching South Reno come back each time. In the bottom of the sixth inning, South Reno’s Jordan Lewis, whose two-run home run in the third made it 5-5, hit a ground ball that escaped the infield and three runs scored on the play.

Matt Stuck, Max Dellalo, Jonathan Weldy and Korey Mazzoni all had RBIs for South Tahoe in the loss to South Reno.

“They really hung tough with the team that’s expected to go to the regional tournament in Utah,” Dreager said. “It was a tough couple of games, but it wasn’t meant to be.”
