Vasquez continues bruising performances

Senior David Vasquez continues to lead South Tahoe’s wrestling team, earning yet another third-place finish as an individual at the Mark Fuller Invitational at Lincoln High School last weekend.

Vasquez went 4-1, losing only to the wrestler who would go on to win the tournament in the heavyweight (275-pound) weight class.

“He was our most outstanding wrestler on the team from last year …,” said South Tahoe wrestling coach Jack Lopez, adding that Lopez racked up 30 victories before the season ended last year. “He had a horrible day at zone … and didn’t go to state. But I’ve seen him beat some awfully good kids. He beat some horses this weekend I’ll tell you.”

If Vasquez continues to wrestle like he has, Lopez said he’s a sure bet for state this year.

South Tahoe finished in the middle of the pack at the 21-team invitational. A final placing was not available.

Sophomore Oscar Moreno (189) won two matches. Cooper Merhaut (130), Nick Naccarato (125), Rusty Faulkner (112) and Garret Gibb (103) each won a match.

South Tahoe remains in fourth place in the 4A Sierra League at 1-1 and 2-1 overall.

They face Sparks and 4A league opponent North Valleys on Friday. Sparks is 0-3 in league and 1-8 overall. North Valley’s has a similar losing record at 0-1 in league and 0-3 overall.

Douglas leads the Sierra League at 4-0, followed by Carson (3-0) and Wooster (2-2).
