Vasquez, Gibb picks up wins in Vikings’ loss to Carson

CARSON CITY –Heavyweight David Vasquez and 103-pounder Garret Gibb were the only two South Tahoe High wrestlers to win their matches in a 58-10 Northern 4A League loss to Carson on Wednesday at Morse Burley Gymnasium.

Vasquez, Northern Nevada’s fourth-ranked heavyweight, pinned the Senators’ Jason Klug with 40 seconds remaining in the third period. Gibb dominated Carson freshman Mark Graham the entire match in a 13-2 win.

The Senators won two matches by forfeit and only two others by pinning opponents.

“We’re just very, very young,” said South Tahoe coach Jack Lopez. “That’s not an excuse, because Carson’s got a very good club. But we had eight sophomores and one freshman going for us tonight. But for us to only give up (two) pins, that’s remarkable.”

The meet started with the 171-pounders, so after Vasquez’ pin in the heavyweight class, the Vikings only trailed13-6. Following Gibb’s defeat over Graham, South Tahoe was behind 13-10 before the Senators won the next nine matches.

“We’re not foolish,” Lopez said. “We’ve been following them all year. Carson’s got a real good dual team; they’re just a better team than us.”

The Vikings, who fell to 1-2 in Northern Nevada dual meets this season, travel to Reno on Saturday for a dual meet against the Huskies.
