Vikes drill Panthers: Grant, DeMarta each score twice in 6-1 rout
Chase Grant and Anthony DeMarta each scored two goals as the South Tahoe boys’ soccer team rolled to a 6-1 Sierra League win over North Valleys on Wednesday afternoon at the Community Youth Sports Complex.
The Panthers, who scored their only goal in the 66th minute to make it 6-1, never had an answer for the Vikings. Three of Grant and DeMarta’s goals came within an 11-minute span late in the first half, then Bryan “Chino” Garcia scored in the 37th minute to give STHS a 4-0 halftime lead.
“We had so many opportunities with this goalie because he went down on his right-side a lot,” said STHS coach Chris DeLeon. “We also got to take a good look at Chase Grant, a wing midfielder for us who played really well with two goals. And we moved Anthony DeMarta up top to give us a few more scoring opportunities and that worked out.”
DeMarta added his second goal in the 49th minute, and Omar Navarro put the Vikings up 6-0 in 64th minute when he slotted a shot past the North Valleys goalkeeper. South Tahoe, which was coming off a 1-1 tie against Carson on Saturday in a battle of league rivals, started subbing its starters in the first half.
“After the fourth goal, we started clearing the bench and moving people around,” DeLeon said. “These are the types of games that we try and stay focused on the long road. It’s nice to have games like this as long as we keep our good habits. In games like this, kids can get a lackadaisical and fall into some bad habits.”
