Vikes fifth at Incline Tournament
Twisting, stretching, and pinning into form – the South Tahoe wrestling team finished fifth out of 10 teams on Saturday in a tournament at Incline High School.
“The kids are coming along. They’re improving with the end of every match and applying the skills they’re learning,” said Tahoe coach Tom Barnes. “They’re very clear eyed and not upset after a match. We work specifically on the things they’re doing and by the end of the day the kids were learning to improve on the mistakes they’re making. That’s why we were able to do as well as we did.”
Tahoe’s best outings came by Steve Hook (130 pounds), Ascension Gonzales (145), Mike Downey (171), and Matt Barton (heavyweight) – each of whom finished in third place. Downey’s was especially nice since it was the junior’s first-ever medal, according to Barnes.
Other Viking finishes included: Cavin Ross (103), fourth; Rook Naccarato (119), fourth; and Amir Misaghia (125), fourth.
The local skiers will compete at the annual Moseley-Tischler event on Tuesday at Squaw Valley.
