Viking tennis teams sweep Fallon
South Tahoe High’s girls and boys tennis teams both opened the season with victories over Fallon on Tuesday.
Junior No. 1 Nikki Moore and senior No. 2 Lindsay Daugherty each swept their singles matches, while the No. 3 doubles team of freshman Shawna Hixenbaugh and senior Mandy Baker took their three matches. Tahoe’s girls won overall, 15-7.5.
“Nikki won three matches convincingly in her first match out helming her team. That’s a nice beginning,” said coach Tom Barnes.
Moore won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3 against Fallon’s No. 1, 2 and 3 players. Daugherty won 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. Hixenbaugh/Baker won 6-2, 7-5, 6-0. The doubles team of Lisa Borges and Danielle Haven took two matches, while Jenny Olsen and Lisa Forkner won one.
“I’m happy to see them win in a first-match situation,” said Barnes, a first-year coach. “They’ve been working about a month and have had to go through a lot of conditioning. They found out that they were stronger than their opponents after three matches. They’re also learning some new stroke techniques and things they haven’t seen before – lots of elements that can be important advantages.”
South Tahoe’s boys beat Fallon. Results were not available.
