Vikings close out regular season with third-place finish

In their final tune-up before next week’s regional golf tournament, the South Tahoe High Vikings finished third in a Sierra Division event Tuesday in Genoa.

The Vikings shot 445 and trailed Carson (394) and Reno (419) at the Resort Course at Genoa Lakes. That was the top-three order in the final regular season standings as well. Those three teams will be accompanied by Douglas at regionals next Tuesday and Wednesday in Elko.

“It’s been a good season for us,” said STHS coach Mike Patterson. “Whenever we can come out of the gym and make it to the regional tournament it’s a good year.

“Hopefully we can carry some momentum into the regional tournament.”

Led by Jimmy Potter’s 76 and no score higher than 82, the Senators cruised to the 25-stroke win. Wooster’s Bobby McCracken posted the day’s low score with a 2-over 74.

Leading STHS’s cause were Dru Blair and Kevin Fannan, who shot 84 and 86, respectively. Also for STHS, Teddy Kosciolek fired an 89, Kyle Garrett and Joel Morris 93s and K.J. Allister 94.

Earning a trip to the state tournament will be a tough task for any team since only two of the eight regional teams will advance. In addition, the five-best players not on the state-qualifying teams will qualify for state.

South Tahoe has never advanced to state in the 12 years the program has existed, but three Viking individuals have qualified. Patterson thinks Fannan, Blair and Kosciolek have a shot at making it as individuals.

“Any one of our top three could go if they put it together with two really good days,” Patterson said.
