Vikings fall to Reed in a squeaker

After battling the majority of the game at a 1-1 draw Tuesday, the visiting Reed Raiders were able to notch a late goal to defeat the South Tahoe Vikings 2-1 in Nevada 4A soccer at South Tahoe Middle School.

Playing their last home game of the season, things looked good for the Vikings early on.

Jenn Galea found the back of the net only 4 minutes in when she drove home a nice cross from Diana Higman.

“That goal really put our spirits up,” Viking coach Julia Russell said.

However, the Raiders responded late in the first half with a barrage of shots. And in the 31st minute they equalized.

The Vikings came out of a 1-1 halftime and saw the game switch momentum over and over.

“It was an inconsistent game,” Russell said. “We had streaks where we were possessing the ball and attacking, then we’d find ourselves bunkered back into a defensive mode.”

In the 71st minute, the Vikings found themselves in that defensive mode and unfortunately couldn’t stop the decisive and go-ahead shot by the Raiders.

“We’re taking it hard,” Russell said. “We are really looking to find consistency.”

Russell went on to say that even with the loss they are still confident and are looking to end their season strong and with their chins held high.

The Vikings will now take to the road to close out their season. The six-game run begins Saturday when they face Wooster in Reno.
