Vikings girls beat Whittell in postseason

The South Tahoe girls’ soccer team got past the Whittell Warriors 6-2 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association 3A Northern Region playoffs.

After taking a three and a half hour bus ride to Lowry High School in Winnemucca, Nevada, the Vikings got off the bus and had some nerves, but those nerves didn’t hamper them in the first minute.

Senior Bailey Segers scored 27 seconds into the game off a crossing pass from freshman Kelsey Hogan.

“I’m very happy to get the win considering a lengthy bus ride out to Winnemucca combined with some first game jitters,” said Vikings head coach Mark Salmon. “We scored early but then we played a bit rushed and direct for the remainder of the half. The final 40 minutes was much different as we gained composure and started to not only possess better but apply pressure to Whittell to force turnovers.”

At the 60th minute, the Vikings were in control and able to substitute and rest starters.

“The players coming off the bench were equally,” Salmon said.

Ashley Trejo and Branda Warden each scored two goals and Giovana De Loia finished the scoring on a half-volley.

The Vikings were excited to play Spring Creek Friday, Nov. 3, because a win would put them in the state championships.
