Vikings’ pitching cements two wins

Staff report

The Viking boys shook the winter dust off their cleats in back-to-back doubleheaders last weekend, and started putting the pieces together for the upcoming season.

The South Tahoe baseball team emerged 2-1-1 from a preseason baseball tournament in Smith Valley.

“I saw a team that was really hungry in the first couple of games,” coach Starbuck Teevan said.

“We won two and tied one, and the game that we tied we came from behind in the last inning, so I saw a good amount of fight in the guys.”

South Tahoe 8, Dayton 3

South Tahoe ace Tyler Sharp earned the win in the Vikings first game of a Friday doubleheader. The lefty held Dayton to two earned runs in five innings and emerged with a 2.80 ERA.

Sharp helped his own cause with an RBI single.

Leadoff batters Sergio Burgueno and Christian Coats ignited the top of the lineup, each lacing two hits in the game. Coats’ performance knocked in two RBIs and Burgueno added one.

Cody Higgins and Jordan Mann each contributed an RBI, and sophomore River Quinn went 3-for-3 at the plate.

South Tahoe 6, Bishop 6

After trailing through three innings, the Vikings surged back in the fourth to knot the game 6-6.

South Tahoe sophomore Jordan Mann fought through three innings, and senior Bobby Gonzales tossed one scoreless inning.

At the plate, junior shortstop Dominic Diana went 2-for-2 with one RBI, and Mann ripped an RBI double.

South Tahoe 10, Fernley 0

The Vikings opened Saturday’s doubleheader with a 10-0 shutout.

“In the two wins our pitching led the way. They were throwing a lot of strikes and getting the guys off balance,” Teevan said.

Senior Cody Higgins tossed three shutout innings, holding Fernley to one hit. He also destroyed the ball at the plate. Higgins went 3-for-3, ripped a double and added two RBIs.

Teammate and fellow pitcher Sharp came through in the clutch as well. The senior knocked in four RBIs off two hits.

Yerington 7, South Tahoe 0

The Vikings ran out of steam in their final game Saturday.

“We came out very flat. We expected to win and didn’t go out there with the fight we had in the first three games,” Teevan said.

Skylar Sheldon, Gonzales and Dillan Bertolina all took turns on the mound, but Yerington bats were finding the ball through four innings.

South Tahoe’s lineup, meanwhile, never hit its stride. Higgins punched the lone hit off Yerington’s ace, but was left stranded on base.

UP NEXT: South Tahoe will face Fallon (1-3) on the road Friday, and then Dayton and Fernley on Saturday at a Mount Rose Lahontan crossover tournament.
