Vikings’ playoff hopes diminish in loss to Colts

South Tahoe High’s girls basketball team didn’t find its offense until it was too late Tuesday night.

The Vikings whittled an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit to seven points before Wooster secured a 39-28 Northern Nevada 4A Division II victory in South Lake Tahoe.

The loss dealt the Vikings’ playoff hopes a severe blow as two teams now stand in the way of moving up to fourth place. Sixth-place STHS (3-6) trails fourth-place Wooster (4-4) and fifth-place Douglas (4-5 entering play Tuesday night) with three division games remaining.

Missy Johnson led South Tahoe with 17 points, including a three-point play that pulled the Vikings to within nine points with 3 minutes, 3 seconds remaining. The senior guard also grabbed seven rebounds.

Jennifer Galea made 1-of-2 free throw attempts and Tirah Samura scored a basket to make the score 35-28 Wooster, but the Colts made several key plays in the final minute to clinch the road victory.

Viking sophomore guard Lindsey Hitt, who burned the Colts for 24 points, including five treys on Jan. 14, was limited to three free throws this time.

Samura swept the glass for a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Vikings struggled with their perimeter shooting throughout, managing only 10 points by the half and 15 through three periods.

STHS, 6-16 overall, plays at Carson on Friday night.
