Vikings tie Galena 1-1

Staff report

The South Tahoe boys’ soccer team went 19-1-3 last season en route to its second Nevada 4A state title in three years. In the first week of the 2006 season, the Vikings are already off that pace following a 1-1 tie with Galena on Tuesday at South Tahoe Middle School.

“We just need to get our act together,” said third-year coach Chris DeLeon, whose team went 3-2 and finished second last weekend at the Galena preseason tournament. “There were definitely some positives in the game and we had opportunities, but it was a frustrating game.”

Galena went ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute when an intended cross ended up sailing over STHS goalie Alfredo Solorio, who was expecting a cross in the box. Eight minutes later, Gil Navarro crashed the goal during a mix-up in the penalty box and found the equalizer for the Vikings.

DeLeon said South Tahoe controlled much of the play throughout the game and held the Grizzlies to just two serious scoring chances. South Tahoe (3-2-1) plays at Fallon next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
