Vikings to scrimmage 3A champs

South Tahoe High has never shied away from tough teams when scheduling preseason football scrimmages.

Throughout former coach Tim Jaureguito’s tenure the Vikings routinely played Joe Sellers’ perennial state contender Wooster Colts.

Sellers and Jaureguito have moved on to Bishop Manogue, turning the Miners into a Nevada Class 3A powerhouse.

Naturally, the Miners make a good fit for South Tahoe as both teams prepare to open the 2003 season.

The two schools will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at STHS’s Viking Bowl. The varsity and junior varsity will divide the field in half to conduct their respective scrimmages. Meanwhile, the Viking freshman squad will travel to Manogue for their 11 a.m. scrimmage in Reno.

“We’re going against the best team in the 3A who I believe would be a playoff team in the 4A,” said Viking coach Todd McIntyre. “Joe wouldn’t tell you that, but I know he believes that. It will be a good contest for us.”

The Vikings are looking forward to the scrimmage, especially since they have spent the past week beating on one another.

“It will be fun to play against (Jaureguito) and show him what we’re made of,” said Viking senior Richie Giesen.

South Tahoe will also scrimmage at Truckee on Aug. 29 before opening its season at home against Bishop, Calif., on Sept. 6.
