Vikings whip Fernley

South Tahoe High’s baseball team broke out of a mini funk in a big way Wednesday, pounding Fernley 11-1 in five innings to take the opening game of the Bishop Manogue Tournament in Reno.

Greg Bruso led a list of Viking stars, allowing just one hit while striking out 13 in the shortened contest. The junior also added two hits. Carson Triggs pounded a grand slam for one of his two hits. Adam Heggen and Matt Solbrig each added two hits, while Bret Uppendahl and B.J. Stockton had a base knock apiece.

“(Bruso’s) fastball was his best pitch. They couldn’t touch him,” said Tahoe coach Ralph Clelan, whose team had previously lost six in a row, including three one-run games. “We finally hit the ball. We weren’t finding a way to win until (Wednesday).”

South Tahoe (5-7, 1-6 league) plays today at 1:30 p.m. against the Lowry/Central Catholic (Modesto) winner.
