Volleyball: Carson wins

Friday sports

Despite a gritty effort from South Tahoe, visiting Carson dropped the spiking Vikings in four sets on Thursday.

“The fans got their money’s worth, that’s for sure,” said South Tahoe head coach Gary Hankoff, whose team fell to 7-8 in league play after Carson completed the season sweep.

“It was a much tougher match than it needed to be,” Hankoff said. “They made some really good adjustments. Chantelle (Young) was hurt, and they did a great job coming after her.”

After coming out nervous and losing the first game 8-15, South Tahoe rallied behind Young, who led the Vikings until going down with an ankle injury. The senior co-captain would come back, and South Tahoe won the second set 15-11, but Carson won the next two 15-9, 15-7.

Courtney Wilson led South Tahoe in kills with 20, and young had 19 kills and 16 digs despite the injury. Jessica Urreaga had 33 assists for South Tahoe.

The Vikings resume play on Tuesday when they travel to Fallon.
