Warrior strikers strike it rich against Dayton

There aren’t many blowouts in soccer.

Don’t the Whittell soccer teams that. Both the boys and girls teams demolished Dayton- 12-0 for the boys and 14-0 for the girls.

The boys were carried by seven goals from Nestor Flores. Justin Haynes, Pat Heeran, Argenis Flores, Dan Facinnetti and Danny Green all added single goals in the rout.

“This is not a good game for us heading into the league opener,” boys head coach Steve Maltase said. “I would have rather had a good close game than a blowout.”

Green’s goal was his first varsity goal, which made it all the more sweet.

Bryan Sigel set up most the goals with his four assists on the day.

The girls also had an easy time with the Dust Devils as they spread the goals around with seven different players finding the back of the net. Caitlin Fagan and Mandy Rawls both scored four goals and Jackie Laurian added two of her own. Haley Shaw, Maggie Jones, Jenna Hayes and Heather O’Brien each contributed one.

“It doesn’t really help to win a game like this,” girls head coach MIke Leeper said. “We dominated the game and still could have score more.”

A rare occurrence took place in the girls game when a Dayton player was given a red card for punching Fagan in the head.

“I think that was out of frustration,” Leeper said.

Both teams open league play at home against Battle Mountain with the girls kicking off at 12 p.m. and the boys at 2 p.m.
